What is a Repost and how to do it

Repost
In your business’s social media management, you’ll find multiple ways to use third-party content that is important for your brand.

For example, sharing a new research publication about your market, content aligned with your company’s values or philosophy helps reveal more about your brand’s identity. Sharing videos or images posted by customers using your products, etc.

In short… There are many reasons to share external content within a digital marketing strategy.

Thus, it’s interesting to include the option to repost in your company’s or e-commerce’s social media content.

But, what’s the issue? Not all social networks allow it, including Instagram.

What is reposting or a repost?

Reposting is a way to interact with followers or influencers by sharing their content on your brand’s Instagram account.

It offers an easy way to gather customer satisfaction information and can be very useful in generating more followers and/or traffic to the website.

With reposting, you’re increasing your brand’s activity on Instagram.

It’s also very convenient when another friendly brand reposts your content, for example, if they design a giveaway… It will capture the captive audience of the associated brand and vice versa.

With reposting, you can choose posts from other users and share them on social media with a specific objective.

Hence the importance of recognizing the type of posts or publications that other users make that can apply to your company’s industry.

In digital marketing, as in many other areas, things should not be done without planning or “just because”.

As mentioned before, there can be multiple interests in sharing this content, and it’s not just about “filling” your Instagram account…

Before reposting content, keep the following in mind:

  • Seek authorization from the owner of the content: nobody likes their creations to be shared without permission, especially for commercial purposes, so ask before doing so.
  • Give credit to the content’s origin: as mentioned above, it’s important that within the copy accompanying the external content, you indicate @nameoftheaccount. The apps used for reposting will help you in this step, copying the original text of the person who posted the image.
  • Avoid adding filters or editing the original image: if it’s necessary to do so, like cropping or size adjustments, or other types of changes, inform the content owner.

Why Do People Repost

Users may repost content for a myriad of reasons. Depending on the status of the original poster and the reposter, the intention behind the repost could be:

  • Promoting a business or organization the reposter is involved in.
  • Showing support for an influencer or brand.
  • Spreading awareness about current events.
  • Providing commentary on political issues.
  • Sharing new music with their followers.
  • Participating in giveaways that require reposting the rules.
  • Raising funds for crowdfunding campaigns.
  • Congratulating friends or family members on life updates.
  • Deceiving users by impersonating a brand or celebrity.

How to Repost on Facebook

To repost a Facebook post, ensure that the post is public or that you are tagged in it. If the option is unavailable, it means the user has restricted reposting.

Find the post you want to share. Click on the ‘Share’ button below the post. Choose ‘Share Now (Friends)’ or select a group. Add any comments you wish in the ‘Say something about this…’ text box. Click ‘Share Now’ to add the post to your feed.

How to Repost on Twitter

On Twitter, you can retweet someone’s content by clicking the ‘Retweet’ button below the original tweet. You can also add your message to the tweet using the ‘Quote Tweet’ function, which credits the original tweet separately from your comments.

How to Repost on Instagram

Instagram allows you to share third-party content to Facebook, or via direct message to one or more people, copy a link to the post, or share stories to your own stories…

However, Instagram does not permit direct reposting from the feed (whether it’s a business or personal account), if you’re looking to share within this network.

While we wait for Instagram to enable this option…

There are several free apps available that allow you to share third-party images (with their authorization or credit) in the text accompanying the image.

Repost for Instagram

This app is available as ‘Repost For Instagram’ on the Play Store (Android) or Apple’s App Store.

It requires necessary permissions to access your Instagram account and view your contacts’ photos, so you can download the content you want to repost.

In the menu of each photo, you’ll find the option to ‘copy link’, then head over to Repost, paste the copied link, and click on the Instagram logo within this app.

This will enable you to share the content and add text to what comes predefined by the original image.

Hootsuite

This platform will be immensely helpful in managing all the social networks of your business, while tracking your market, creating and scheduling content, planning campaigns, etc.

If you already use this platform, you can quickly and easily repost images from its desktop or mobile version.

You can see the step-by-step guide on this link.

DownloadGram

With DownloadGram, it’s really easy to share content from both the mobile version and desktop for PC and MacOS, especially if you don’t want to download external apps to repost.

First, click on the image you want to repost on Instagram and select ‘copy link’.

Then, just go to your favorite browser and type https://downloadgram.com/. On their homepage, you’ll find a box where you insert the copied link.

You’ll be able to download the content and then open Instagram to share the downloaded image from your feed, including the source citation, credit, and you’re set!

Conclusion

Some key elements to consider when reposting are to mention the author of the original content, either manually or through apps that offer repost services with origin credits.

Additionally, following certain hashtags on Instagram can also help identify quality content that can be shared.

What’s important is that the reposted content generates high user engagement indicators, whether it’s because it’s relevant, important, attractive, exciting, or adds additional value to social media accounts for interaction with users.
